Meet Our Fall Intern–Neel Gurley

August, 2020

Whenever it is possible, we like to have interns work in our office.  It reflects our goal of helping to train the next generation, but they energy which a good intern brings is great for our entire team.  Often an intern’s curiosity forces us to look at a client’s construction issue from a different perspective which benefits all of us.  We are lucky that Neel Gurly, a senior at the University of South Caroline, wanted to join our team.  Welcome Neel!

About Me

My name is Neel Gurley and I am a 2020 graduate from the University of South Carolina’s College of Hospitality, Retail, and Sport Management. I was born and raised in Thomasville, Georgia, and graduated from Brookwood School in 2016. After high school I had no clue what I wanted to study in college, until after a meeting with my advisor made me realize that there was a major where I could study sports, which is my passion. During my time at South Carolina I was a member of the fraternity Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) where I served on the recruitment and membership development committees. I also got the opportunity to work for the University of South Carolina Football team for a year and a half, filming workouts, practices, and putting videos together for Coach Will Muschamp and the rest of his staff as well as getting the opportunity to work multiple games. After completion of my internship, I will officially have graduated with a Bachelor’s in Sport and Entertainment Management. I plan to begin applying for Sport Law programs this Fall to hopefully start graduate school in January.

Why do I want to go to law school?

When I decided to study sports, I went in with the mindset that I would find something that interests me.  It took me 2 years, but I found what I wanted to do:  I want to go to law school and study Sport Law to become a Sports Agent. I became interested after taking classes in Artist Representation and Contract Negotiation, and had a great professor that taught both of these that happened to be the tour manager for Hootie and the Blowfish for a while.

I always love going out of my way to help others and putting a smile on their faces. One of the more forgotten sporting events of the year is each professional sports league’s rookie draft. This is actually one of my favorite things to watch, and I always love to make mock drafts and see where each top caliber athlete ends up getting their name called. But recently I’ve started to think about how amazing it would be to be the agent for a player that gets drafted first overall, gets his client the best athletic apparel contract, tons of endorsements, and just helps them get everything they want and worked hard for to get. That’s my dream.

Why Intern at Cobb Law Group?

I’ve known Mr. Cobb and his wife for probably half of my life now, and while at school I always thought about how great it would be if I could work with him, knowing how successful he has been for quite some time. When Mr. Cobb presented the opportunity to me I knew I had to take it. I hope to gain a wealth of knowledge and experience working an environment such as this one and how to really understand contracts and read documents to best help a client.

Fun or Unique Hobbies

Whenever I have down time to myself I like to relax and play video games, watch a show on Hulu, or any basketball or soccer game that I can stream. I also like to play pickup soccer when I can, but ever since COVID-19 that hasn’t happened as much as I would have liked. Ever since I’ve been home I’ve picked golf back up and have either been playing with my friends or my dad once or twice a week.
