Augusta is the third largest city in the state of Georgia and the Augusta-Richmond County Metropolitan area is the second largest metro area behind Atlanta with 580,270 people residing in it. The city of Augusta has just about 198,000 people and it is located at the fall line of the Savannah River in the piedmont climate of Georgia.

Augusta has a very rich history being established in 1736 and named after Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, but long before European settlers came to the Augusta area the Native Americans traveled through this region as a safe passage across the Savannah River. As cotton cultivation became more popular in the 19th century Augusta began to flourish economically, partly due to its use of slave labor.

In more recent years Augusta has been the site of many civil rights demonstrations and protests, and today it is known worldwide for being the home of golf’s most prestigious tournament each spring, The Masters.

Demographics 

Augusta’s racial makeup includes a little over 55% of its population being African American, 39% white and Latino people at 4.1%, as well as minuscule percentages of other ethnicities.

Augusta obtains just over 75,208 households and over 63% of these homes include families with or without children under 18 years old living with them. The city itself is rather young as compared to some of the neighboring counties with a median age of 33 years.

The median income per household in Augusta is much higher than the national average at $37,231, and the yearly median income per family is $45,372. This brings the per capita income in Augusta to right at $19,558.

Religion is a very big part of Augusta’s demographics, and the predominant religion in the city is the Southern Baptist Convention with over 114,000 local members. The Catholic community includes over 31,687 members, the United Methodist Church has over 31,000, the National Baptist Convention has 26,671, The Presbyterian Church has over 4,500 and the Jewish community has about 1,300 local members.

Augusta offers three universities including the Augusta Technical College, Augusta University and Paine College. Augusta is a part of the Richmond County School System that contains 36 elementary, 10 middle and nine high schools. There are also 10 religious-affiliated private schools in Augusta.

Popular Places 

When it comes to the best places to be in Augusta nothing gets bigger than Augusta National Golf Club and The Masters tournament. It’s here that the best golfers from all over the world compete every spring, and although getting tickets to the Masters is close to nearly impossible for even the biggest golf fans, it’s worth checking out and paying the extra money it takes to experience golf’s pinnacle tournament.

Another great place to go in Augusta to experience the beautiful nature the city possesses is the Riverwalk. It’s here that you’ll get a wonderful nature path along a beautiful river with great views and a lot of opportunity for wildlife sightings, including one of the most diverse selection of birds in America.

The Augusta Museum of History is a great place to take the whole family and it offers a wide selection of exhibits that thoroughly explains the history of the city, including colonial times all the way through the Civil Rights Movement. Don’t miss out on this great, educational experience!

Another really exciting outdoors experience in Augusta includes the Savannah Rapids Visitor Center, which is similar to the Riverwalk but provides much more detailed information about the local ecosystem and offers professionally guided tours.

When it comes to learning more about the rich culture of Augusta look no further than the Sacred Heart Cultural Center. This is one of the most unique buildings in the entire city with an incredible ambience, and is a great location for weddings and other local events, including the Garden Festival.

The Morris Museum of Art is one of the very best museums in the city and includes a large variety of exhibits from local, as well as world-renowned artists.

Another great outdoor experience just waiting to be had in Augusta is at the Phinizy Swamp Nature Park, which is one of the best places to connect with nature in the city, and is by far one of the most beautiful swamp areas in the state of Georgia.

For sports fans there is the Lake Olmstead Stadium, which is the home of the Augusta Green Jackets baseball team and is a wonderful gathering place for baseball fans from all over the city to come and catch a glimpse of America’s pastime on any given summer evening.

Food & Leisure

Augusta is known for its great restaurants, and some of the most renowned restaurants in the city include the Frog Hollow Tavern, Whiskey Bar Kitchen, Abel Brown, Cadwallader’s Café, Calverts, Boll Weevil, Honey from the Rock and Rhinehart’s Oyster Bar.

Augusta does have a very thriving nightlife scene, and some of the bars that are considered to be the most fun or highly rated include The Backyard Tavern, Club Velvet, The Hideout, Fox’s Lair, FLO, Shannon’s, Sharifa’s Hookah Bar and Lounge and Coyote’s Augusta.

Government 

In 1995 the city of Augusta and Richmond County consolidated its local government to include a mayor and 10 county commissioners.

The Richmond Superior Court Clerk is located at 735 James Brown Blvd, the Augusta Judicial Center is located at 735 James Brown Blvd and the Augusta-Richmond County Consolidated Government Building is located at 535 Telfair Street. These three buildings serve as the core for all of Augusta and Richmond County’s law enforcement and judicial proceedings.
